The Foreman

Six Steps. No Shortcuts.

Marcus Osei walks every new client through this sequence. The steps don't change — from a residential driveway to a municipal arterial road.

01
Site Grading & Survey — asphalt paving process step
± 0.2%
Grade tolerance
Marcus Osei — Site Foreman, 14 years

Site Grading & Survey

We run elevation shots across the entire surface. Every job starts with a grading plan that solves drainage before we touch the base. No plan, no pour.

02
Base Compaction — asphalt paving process step
95–98%
Proctor density
Marcus Osei — Site Foreman, 14 years

Base Compaction

Granular A is laid in 4-inch lifts and compacted to 95–98% Proctor. We nuclear-gauge test each lift. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't move forward.

03
Tack Coat Application — asphalt paving process step
0.10 gal/yd²
Avg tack rate
Marcus Osei — Site Foreman, 14 years

Tack Coat Application

SS-1h asphalt emulsion is sprayed at 0.05–0.15 gal/yd². Skipping tack coat is the industry's most common cost-cutting move. It causes delamination in 2–3 years. We don't skip it.

04
Hot-Mix Surface Pour — asphalt paving process step
150°C
Pour temperature
Marcus Osei — Site Foreman, 14 years

Hot-Mix Surface Pour

HL-3 or HL-4 mix arrives direct from the plant at 150°C. Paving machine maintains consistent mat thickness. Joints are hand-raked and sealed while still hot.

05
Rolling & Compaction — asphalt paving process step
≤ 3mm
Surface tolerance
Marcus Osei — Site Foreman, 14 years

Rolling & Compaction

Steel drum rollers make 4–6 passes in a specific pattern — breakdown, intermediate, finish. Density is tested again. Surface must be within 3mm of spec before we leave.

06
Seal Coat & Final Inspection — asphalt paving process step
100%
Inspection pass rate
Marcus Osei — Site Foreman, 14 years

Seal Coat & Final Inspection

Coal-tar or asphalt-based sealer applied 30–90 days post-pour. Municipal inspection scores are documented and shared with the client. Job isn't closed until the paperwork is filed.
